Kenta is a tiny husband! He gets sick a lot, kind of like me. He is a very dear friend to me. I am going to become strong and protect him.

I hope so. Our waistlines are very comparable. Although I am taller, many of my clothes fit him without too much issue.

Nenonen, I realise you did some research on the subject but... you do realise that in society people legally can only have one husband?

Partners is a different matter, but there are certain extra connotations with 'husband' and 'wife' that are legally binding.

Marriage is a legal binding between two people, a sacred vow to swear to spend the rest of your lives together, to look after one another and treat each other well. That's the romantic side to it, but there are actual legalities to do with money, property and a number of other things as well. If one of you becomes incredibly sick, the other is able to make life changing decisions for you, or are given your savings if you were to pass away.

I'm aware there are many types of love, but marriage is a legal contract of sorts... At least in the places I know it is this way.

What's a "legal"? Is that like "Illegal"? Chipp told me that it is "illegal" to consume alcohol if you are under a certain age.

It's the opposite of it, yes. Illegal is when something is wrong within a society, legal is when something is right. In this case, marriage is a binding contract, you say vows to one another such as protecting, caring for and putting the other first above all others.

[ The look of confusion on their face as they try to puzzle out exact what that means and how it applies to them is obvious; the cogs inside their head are turning furiously.

In the literal sense, is there someone they would protect above all others?

...Kenta, probably. Chipp, Shigeru, Knives, Saya, Oryou and Vash are all strong enough not to need much protection, but Kenta doesn't have the best health. He's weak (albeit still stronger than Nen in a lot of regards), and gets sick easy. He's someone Nen would protect before anyone else.

Is there someone they would care for and put first before anyone else?

That one's harder. Nen spends several long moments thinking hard about it. ]

...I don't think I understand the concept well enough to provide an adequate response. My answer would change depending on the circumstance. Kenta needs more protecting than Chipp, but Shigeru is poor at looking after himself and needs to be prioritized when providing care.

{ and ayato is patient, waits for nen to think about the question and what it means to them. but the answer does make him smile softly, as it really is a very nen response. in a way, he's glad that shigeru is kind enough to recognise the way nen things and accept it as wholeheartedly as he does. }

Then let's put it this way, if a situation arises where you would be only able to save one person, would you be able to choose just one, or would the difficulty mean you couldn't choose between them? There isn't a right or wrong answer to this, I should note. I know a few people who have multiple partners, but they are not married, nor do I know if this world would allow marriage to multiple people.

I doubt anyone would leave you alone, Nenonen. You are very charming. { he wants to be reassuring after worrying them so much now. } The other terms of endearment you use are very much different. Husband is just... a little more complicated, I suppose. Granted, I can't say that I understand your feelings either, I don't think I could look at anyone else or feel about anyone else like I do with Thoma. It's merely a different mindset.

Mm, it is hard for me to understand feeling that way about only one person.

[ But then again, a lot of how Nenonen feels and their attachments to other people are born from their unique (and rather tragic) circumstances. Their idea of romance and affection were built from the ground-up after arriving. They didn't have words for how they felt before--so Ayato's side of things, too, is just another thing for them to learn more about. ]

But Thoma is most definitely a good husband. Please keep him a long time.

That may be due to my own circumstances, rather than your own. I mentioned before about the assassins, did I not? There are very few people I trusted as much as Ayaka or Thoma. It's obviously different here, but one day I'll return home.

As much as my life, I can't imagine entrusting my heart to anyone else either.

He isn't a husband yet. But perhaps one day we'll hold vows to cement that. Besides, I think out of the two of us I may be the lucky one.

I wanted to marry her too, but the dream ended before I could ask. I don't want to marry her now, though. It was just in the portal.

I see... Oh, though I shouldn't forget, it is worth mentioning that while I said there was no right or wrong answer for what I asked before, that is only if you set clear boundaries with each partner so they know where they stand with you. Especially when you seem to care for each other them equally just in different ways.

{ and at least he's gathered some information for shigeru here, without asking anything outright. that last bit was a gentle nudge for nen to be open and honest to each of them about how they feel. }
